Henning Troll and Gnomes and Troll: A Compendium Books.

Two classics and the inspiration for Jim Henson's Sweetums. This hand-carved Henning Troll proved to be the inspiration for the lumbering Troll stage hand on the Muppets. Henning Engelsen carved his first wooden figures in 1947, and his company remains Norway's main producer of hand-carved Trolls.

Everyone loves Troll stories, especially when they are not about Russian kids in their bedrooms pulling your chain on social media. Here is a story about how a Troll saved one person's farm with some simple advice.

Skalle Troll inviting farmr to diner, but the waste from the stable above almost drips on farmer's meal.

Skalle

There was a farm on which all the tenants failed. There was a farmer who was so poor that he had no option but to take the lease. Upon entering the farm, he said, “Hello, good evening, Skalle!” Skalle in his tongue meant barren ground, but he heard a voice answer him, “Good evening!”
Then the farmer said, “For anyone I cannot see, I’m inviting you to a Christmas dinner.”
Then on Christmas, he heard the same voice again say, “Merry Christmas!” The two then sat down for a fine meal. As the plates were cleared, the voice said, “May you meet me outside the stable on New Year’s Eve, and I will return the favor.”
So he went out again, as told, and shortly heard the voice on New Year's Eve. The voice invited him into his underground home below the stable.
Skalle the Troll appeared before him for the first time, holding two plates. The farmer began to eat, and Skalle grabbed his plate from him before the hole in the roof dripped on his meal.
“If you move the stable to the east, you will do fine and avoid the problems of the previous tenants.”The farmer did so, and soon after, only his friend was called Skalle anymore as the farm flourished!

Bjorn and the Jersey Devil

So there are many misconceptions about who and what the Jersey Devil is. Was he a marketing scheme of Benjamin Franklin or a real cryptid walking among the pine trees?

The Troll and the Bear
(Story from Trolls: a Compendium)

Goblin looking at giant cat under table,; which is really a bear.

In Højegaard, the place with the high yard, Denmark, in the old days no one could stay over Christmas Eve. All the folk had to go down to the old farm in Rønnebæk, which has long been given up, and stay there till Christmas morning, for every Christmas Eve there came an ugly Troll from Dragehøi (dragon hay), with a sackful of toads on his back, which he roasted at the fire in the sitting room, and ate one after another; but if anyone ventured to stay there over night, he might be prepared to be torn in pieces by the Troll.

One time, just as the folk were leaving the farm, there came a woodcutter who went about with his bear, Bjarki. They told him why they had to leave, but the woodcutter asked to be allowed to stay overnight, and the bear insisted.

Towards evening, the Troll sat down by the fire and toasted one toad after the other.

Then he noticed the man and said, “What’s your dog’s name?”

“Toad,” said the man.

The Troll took a roasted toad and held it out to the bear, saying, “Toad shall have a toad,” but Bjarki the bear growled and began to rise.

“Yes,” said the man to the Troll, “just you take care and not make him angry, or he’ll tear you in pieces.”

The Troll looked quite frightened and asked, “Have you any more like him?”

“Yes,” said the man, “this one has five young ones, which are lying outside on the baking oven.”

The Troll made haste to tie up the toads he had left in the sack, threw them on his back, and went out the door in a hurry.

The next morning, when the people came home, the woodcutter was lying all right in the bed and the bear was beside the fire, both quite comfortable. When the man told them how he had gotten on, they were very glad and bade him come again next Christmas Eve, which he did, but the Troll did not come and has never shown himself there since.

Some of My Favorite ABRAMS Books

Gnomes, Giants, and Trolls books on artist desk.

Abrams purchased the American rights after being inspired by the success of Gnomes (written by Wil Huygen and illustrated by Rien Poortvliet) in the Netherlands. After it sold 700,000 books in the first year (4 million copies to date for $10 million in sales), they sought out David Larkin to create a series of books featuring other mystical creatures. The second in the series, Faeries, illustrated by Alan Lee and Brian Froud, went on to be even more successful, selling 5 million so far. Lee became famous for set designs for Peter Jackson's Tolkien movies and Brian Froud for the movies he created with Jim Henson (Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal). The last in the series was Giants.

Bears and Trolls

Chri Dowgin sitting on Sal the Bear who likes blueberries.

Heroes in the sagas were often named after bears. Beowulf was a kenning for the bear that wolfs down the Bee's honey. Then Bödvar Bjarki, the warlike little bear, is the son of Bjorn the bear. Some believe Beowulf and Bjarki could be one and the same. Or Hallbjorn, the half-bear, who fathered Ketil Salmon, who married a Troll. Bears and Trolls were closely linked. Berserkers were magical for their ability to transform into bears. Troll means magical. Bjarki was the head of twelve berserkers. To learn more about how Trolls link to Bears by reading a truly magical book, pick up a copy of Trolls: A Compendium today!

Civilized Dragons...Coming Soon

Lizard dragon with butterfly wings in residential neighborhood of lost ancient civilization.

As civilizations advance, they begin to make items biodegradable. We know man made rope 50,000 years ago, but we only have examples that survive from 5,000 years ago. What else has been buried under the sands of time? The various lineages of humanity stretch back 4 million years. What is more foolish to believe? That civilization only existed for the last 5,000 years, or that multiple civilizations grew and collapsed for the other 3,905,000 years. Did man sit in trees scratching his back for almost 4,000,000 years and then decide to make the computer at the last minute?

What did the dragons look like back in the day?

Welcome back to my blog about balloons, rocket ships, airplanes, space travel, Star Wars, sci-fi, and everything about flying! This time we will look at some of my favorite space pilots. After you read the list, won't you add some of your favorites!

10 of My Favorite Space Jockeys

10. Maya from Space 1999.  I think she was the first redhead I fell in love with. I would share my balloons with her any day. Maya was a metamorph who could shape shift into a mean ape like creature when she wanted. In that shape she might even get Chewbacca to fall in love with her. She also piloted my favorite space ship of all time the Eagle.

9. Flash Gordon. In 1936 Buster Crabbe had played him in a serial. I used to watch this every Saturday leading into Tom Baker's Doctor Who. He also flew one of my favorite space age pulp fiction rockets.
