The Black Hole

The strange story of this painting. I painted it at Bleachers, in Salem, MA, while The Bogus Quartet (a three-piece band) was playing in front of me. It is made with butyl rubber and beets with an applique of myself severely foreshorten built up on various layers of Bristol board with my arm extending from the canvas. OK, it was strange enough watching me jump around, blending the best of sword fighting, slam dancing, and some Keystone Cops slapstick while painting it, but that is nothing compared to the stories it inspired.

One day my friend was watching it as it billowed in front of my closed window; the apartment was not weathertight. She asked me if I cared to know what it reminded her of. I said sure, and she told me that Jesus and she had spent the last year knocking alien heads out of the sky with crucifixes before they could infest human babies. I dismissed it since she was recently hit by a car and had a head injury.

Enter the second friend. She repeated the question and shared the story of her ex-husband finding tiny white scabs on the back of his head when he woke. They took him to a hypnotist. Under hypnosis, he said he was being abducted by aliens who infested human babies by dropping little white heads out of the sky before human souls can enter these babies.

The two women never met each other or the artist who painted the iconic folk painting for The Talking Heads, so it is strange to see three people sharing the same weird story. I forgot these stories for years until millennials plagued me for a few years, then I realized I first heard them the year the earliest millennial was born. I always thought they were aliens...
