Troll Breakfast
Welcome to another adventure from the Thousand Acre Woods deep within Trollheim of the NJ Pine Belt! Tales Chronicled by Jonathan Hulton... That's me! In today's tale, we are coming back from a bender and I'm cooking brakfast at Karl's and Karl is being a dink...
We just came back from a bender at Cedar Bridge Tavern where old Sammy Buck played all morning, defeating much younger fiddlers by playing behind his back most of the time.
There is a rumor that he was paying Karl to steal a flock of mutton to pay Fossegrim at the falls at Ferago Forge to tune his fiddle.
I just got off Gramps' shoulder as we entered Karl's house. I was cooking us up some Norwegian Pancakes and greasy potatoes to balance off their stomachs. Mine was fine; I am happy with one McEwans Scotch Ale or a horn of mead. I'm usually dancing and avoiding free rounds.
Karl was enjoying some honey on his pancakes, but he wasn't offering us any.
"Karl, isn't that the honey from my hives I gave you?" asked Gramps.
"Yes, my stores are real low, but if you win my bet, I will share some with you," Karl answered.
That is a slaTroll under bridge.p in the face; to be denied a portion of a gift you granted to another.
"OK," Gramps said, slapping Karl in the back of the head.
"What do I have in my pocket?"
"I need some hint…"
"Its oval, white and yellow inside a white shell that resembles an egg,"
I am amazed to hear Gramps answer, "A sun stone—"
Karl laughed and smeared his face in honey, taking another bite; "No, my friend, it's—an egg!"
Then Gramps smashed his fist into his thigh, squishing the egg.
Karl put his hand in his pocket to clean it out.
Then Gramps took a little box out of his pocket. When he opened it, a bee flew out and landed on the honey on Karl.
Then Karl went to smack it, but got egg all over his face.
Now that was another slap in the face.
Just remember Socrates' last words, "I drank what…"

Following the Harry N. Abrams, Inc. tradition of the series that created Brian Froud's and Alan Lee's Faeries and Gnomes by Wil Huygen and Rien Poortvliet, we present you with what would have been the next book in the series: Trolls: A Compendium. Trolls—do you think you know what they are? Could you be wrong?
Trolls within Scandinavian lore, myth, saga, fantasy, and folktales are actually anything magical within our northern neighbor's culture. Richly illustrated in this volume are the tales of faeries, dwarves, nissen, huldras, gods, Jotuns, draugar, ghosts, and more. Also, this book introduces our readers to the world of Trollheim, populated by Nattrolls that escaped the 17th-century Swedish colony within the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Narrated by Christopher Jonathan Hulton, who lives in the Thousand Acre Woods just after the Civil War, their tales are filled with Native American lore and tales of their neighbor, the Jersey Devil.
