A Bear's Life
Welcome to another adventure from the Thousand Acre Woods. A place on the edge of Trollheim deep within the mysterious NJ Pine Belt! Tales Chronicled by Christopher Jonathan Hulton...That's me! Today's tale, Bosco tells us how wonderful life is!

It's different being a house bear. I mean when I'm walking through the Pines, I'm king of the forest. I'm huge, like Paul Bunyan huge! I stand taller than the biggest buck.
But.
But when you're a house bear to a family of Trolls, you're no more than a lapdog. They are so huge, their house has cat holes—though it does keep the mice out…I can sit at normal picnic tables, but here I nap under them.

When their daughter was little, before she learned to shape-shift, she dragged her feet when I gave her pony rides.

In the wild, I eat a bushel of blueberries, but theirs are as big as pumpkins.

It's sort of deflating.

Now Bjorn is great. He has a strong, good bear's name—Bjorn. Only Beowulf would be cooler! He plays fetch with me all the time. He throws me fire hydrants, railroad ties, anvils, and anchors.

In the summer, we wade through lakes and jump bridges.

Helgi, she is the best cook. She knows how to cook in bear proportions! Her fruit tarts are just nothing short of pur-fection! Did I say the house is overrun by cats…I love lazy Sunday mornings when we lay in bed and she scratches my ears when I'm sprawled out on her chest.

Now Grams is back. I help her dig her roots and sniff out her herbs for her remedies. She knows where all the secret honey locust trees are. They have delicious pods filled with honey goodness and spikes all over to scratch on.

Gramps and Karl. What is there to say? They are like watching a train wreck. Great fun. Sometimes they go too far, then I'm around to growl at anyone they started trouble with.

Oh, they can handle themselves, but if anyone knew how they could, they wouldn't be invited back to any of the taverns. Growing through the roof and stepping on drunks don't make you many barkeep friends. So the proprietors believe a growling bear is more manageable.
Then every Saturday, I play poker with the Jersey Devils. Gast and Nis, sometimes Old Scratch joins us, but he cheats more than me. Well, I don't cheat; I just bare my teeth a little when I raise on a bad hand. But he just cheats outright! I prefer it when he sticks to the fiddle.
Then there are the adventures with Nobbi, but those adventures are too grand to share in a few sentences. Oh, the paisley….

Following the Harry N. Abrams, Inc. tradition of the series that created Brian Froud's and Alan Lee's Faeries and Gnomes by Wil Huygen and Rien Poortvliet, we present you with what would have been the next book in the series: Trolls: A Compendium. Trolls—do you think you know what they are? Could you be wrong?
Trolls within Scandinavian lore, myth, saga, fantasy, and folktales are actually anything magical within our northern neighbor's culture. Richly illustrated in this volume are the tales of faeries, dwarves, nissen, huldras, gods, Jotuns, draugar, ghosts, and more. Also, this book introduces our readers to the world of Trollheim, populated by Nattrolls that escaped the 17th-century Swedish colony within the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Narrated by Christopher Jonathan Hulton, who lives in the Thousand Acre Woods just after the Civil War, their tales are filled with Native American lore and tales of their neighbor, the Jersey Devil.
